In the United States, “rye whiskey” is, by law, made from a mash of at least 51 percent rye. Rye whiskey was the prevalent whiskey of the northeastern states, especially Pennsylvania and Maryland, but largely disappeared after Prohibition. It is produced in partnership with the Buffalo Trace distillery to this date. When the Van Winkle family had to sell off their interest in the Stitzel-Weller distillery, which produced the famous brand, they held on to one label, Old Rip Van Winkle. When Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle acquired the “Old Fitzgerald” brand, he successfully turned it into one of the best selling bourbon brands in America.
